SOS Pets of Ouachita is a volunteer-powered non-profit dedicated to rescuing, protecting, and advocating for pets in Ouachita Parish and beyond. We believe every animal deserves love, care, and dignity, and we work tirelessly to save abandoned, neglected, and abused pets, providing them with medical care, safe shelter, and a second chance at life.
Our mission goes beyond rescue — we strive to prevent suffering through education, affordable spay/neuter programs, and strong community partnerships with veterinary clinics, shelters, and animal advocates.
Through adoption events, fostering, and rehabilitation, we connect deserving pets with loving families, building lifelong bonds that change lives. Every donation, volunteer hour, and act of kindness brings us closer to a future where no pet is left behind.
SOS Pets of Ouachita is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in West Monroe, Louisiana. Tax-exempt status was granted in February 2017, marking the official commitment to animal welfare in the community.
Mission: The core mission is to build a new, public animal shelter to better serve Ouachita Parish and its pets. Private and public funds are being raised for the design and construction of this facility. The new shelter aims to provide a safe, humane, and efficient environment for animals, promoting rescue, rehabilitation, and responsible pet ownership.
Work: Efforts extend beyond fundraising. Community outreach and education actively promote responsible pet ownership and the importance of spay/neuter programs. Partnerships with organizations like Best Friends Animal Society help gather information and secure grant funding, further supporting the pursuit of a no-kill policy for the new shelter.
Leadership: The team is led by individuals like Joan Hampton, whose passion and vision are instrumental in bringing goals to fruition.
Looking Forward: A modern, climate-controlled animal shelter is being built to accommodate more animals and improve the rescue and rehabilitation process. The new facility will feature specialized areas for puppies, small dogs, cats, and exotic animals, including multiple “catios” for cats, as well as indoor and outdoor kennels that open into fenced play areas for dogs. A cooperative endeavor agreement with the Ouachita Parish Police Jury (OPPJ) has been reached for shelter construction.
